Raven Zz Plant Seeds:
Guide to Storing, Sowing and Germination

Updated: July 6, 2023

The Raven ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’) has gained popularity as a low-maintenance and stylish indoor plant. With its deep green, glossy leaves and compact growth habit, the Raven ZZ adds a touch of elegance to any space. While this plant is typically propagated through division or stem cuttings, it is also possible to grow it from seeds. In this guide, we will explore the process of storing, sowing, and germinating Raven ZZ plant seeds.

Storing Raven ZZ Plant Seeds

Before you can sow Raven ZZ plant seeds, you need to obtain them. The easiest way to do this is by allowing your mature Raven ZZ plant to produce flowers and subsequently develop seeds. The flowers of the Raven ZZ are small and inconspicuous, typically appearing in clusters on long stalks. After pollination, these flowers will produce small berries that contain the seeds.

To collect the seeds, wait for the berries to turn black and become slightly soft. This indicates that they are ripe and ready for harvesting. Gently squeeze the berries to remove the seeds. It is important to note that the berries contain a sap-like substance that can cause skin irritation, so wearing gloves is recommended during this process.

Once you have collected the seeds, wash them thoroughly under running water to remove any remaining sap or debris. After washing, allow the seeds to air dry completely. Once dry, store them in a cool, dry place in an airtight container or a sealed plastic bag. When stored properly, Raven ZZ plant seeds can remain viable for several months.

Sowing Raven ZZ Plant Seeds

Now that you have properly stored Raven ZZ plant seeds, it’s time to sow them. Here’s how:

  1. Fill a seed tray or small pots with a well-draining potting mix. A mix specifically formulated for cacti and succulents will work well for the Raven ZZ plant.

  2. Moisten the potting mix with water until it is evenly damp but not soaking wet. Excess moisture can lead to rotting of the seeds.

  3. Sow the Raven ZZ plant seeds on the surface of the potting mix, spacing them a few inches apart. Gently press them into the soil, ensuring they are in good contact with the mix.

  4. Cover the seeds lightly with a thin layer of fine potting mix or vermiculite. This will help retain moisture around the seeds while still allowing them to receive light.

  5. Place the seed tray or pots in a warm location with bright, indirect light. The ideal temperature for germination is around 70-75°F (21-24°C).

  6. Keep the potting mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mist the surface regularly to prevent it from drying out.

  7. Be patient and monitor the seed tray or pots regularly. Germination can take anywhere from two weeks to several months, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results.

Germinating Raven ZZ Plant Seeds

Successful germination of Raven ZZ plant seeds requires patience and consistent care. Here are some tips to help you:

  1. Maintain a warm and humid environment for the seeds by covering the seed tray or pots with a clear plastic bag or a propagator lid. This will create a mini greenhouse effect and help retain moisture.

  2. Ensure good air circulation by opening the plastic bag or propagator lid for a few minutes each day. This will prevent fungal growth and promote healthy seedling development.

  3. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the plastic covering and place them in a bright location with indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch their delicate leaves.

  4. Continue to keep the potting mix slightly moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other issues.

  5. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots once they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Use a well-draining potting mix similar to the one used for sowing.

  6. Provide regular care to your Raven ZZ plant seedlings, including watering when the top inch of soil feels dry and fertilizing with a balanced houseplant fertilizer every two to four weeks during the growing season.

Growing Raven ZZ plants from seeds can be a rewarding experience, albeit a slightly more challenging one compared to other propagation methods. With proper care and patience, you can nurture these seeds into healthy and thriving plants that will delight you with their dark green foliage for years to come.
